{"id":1020,"date":"2021-04-09T18:54:27","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T12:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jobanmagazine.com\/globaledition\/?p=1020"},"modified":"2021-04-09T18:54:27","modified_gmt":"2021-04-09T12:54:27","slug":"on-chinas-muslim-crackdown-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jobanmagazine.com\/globaledition\/2021\/04\/09\/on-chinas-muslim-crackdown-2\/","title":{"rendered":"On China\u2019s Muslim crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beijing\u2019s aggressive Sinification campaign is putting at stake the internal cohesion of Asia\u2019s most powerful state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Amid President Xi Jinping\u2019s consolidation of power in China, there are growing concerns over an ongoing crackdown on religious freedoms and basic rights of minority groups in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">China has reportedly embarked on an aggressive \u201cSinification\u201d campaign to recast various \u201cforeign\u201d\u00a0religions to reflect the regime\u2019s priorities and the country\u2019s unique culture. Abrahamic faiths originating from the Middle East have been the main target of this new policy, which has provoked massive backlash among various ethnic-religious groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In particular, the large Muslim Chinese community has resisted coercive \u201cre-education\u201d\u00a0efforts by the authorities, which have\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/31\/asia\/china-xinjiang-new-rules\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">progressively restricted<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0religious minorities from observing the basic articles of their faith. According to a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/policies-politics\/article\/2159639\/uns-claim-china-holds-1-million-uygurs-xinjiang-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report submitted to the United Nations,<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">as many as one million Uighurs from the western region of Xinjiang may have been forced into internment camps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Some rights groups are accusing China of engaging in an all campaign\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/we-cant-ignore-this-brutal-cleansing-in-china\/2018\/08\/14\/e0b7b0f0-9f19-11e8-83d2-70203b8d7b44_story.html\">of ethnic cleansing<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">. The Chinese authorities, however, have vehemently denied such claims as baseless\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cdefamatory rumors\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Beijing claims that they are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/1115022.shtml\">only trying to prevent<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0the emergence of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cChina\u2019s Syria\u201d or \u201cChina\u2019s Libya\u201d in Muslim-majority provinces through an iron-fist of decisive security measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Yet, ongoing efforts at Sinification of Islam will likely only intensify deep ethnic-religious faultlines in modern China. What\u2019s at stake is no less than the internal coherence in Asia\u2019s most powerful civilisation-state.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Mirage of harmony<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In popular imagination, China is often synonymous with authoritarian tranquility. After all, modern China seems like a bastion of stability, where a communist state has, quite paradoxically, overseen the world\u2019s most successful model of capitalist expansion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Within less than a generation, the Asian nation has gone from an economic backwater to a global superpower. It has lifted hundreds of millions of its citizens from extreme poverty, while investing hundreds of billions of dollars across the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Surveys have consistently shown\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/china.usc.edu\/survey-reports-chinese-are-positive-about-present-and-optimistic-about-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that majority of the population<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0is satisfied with the ruling communist party\u2019s performance. Yet, a more careful look reveals intensified socioeconomic fault lines, with religious freedom emerging as a key area of contestation in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Over the past decade, there has been an upsurge of resistance, sometimes even armed and violent, against Beijing\u2019s marginalisation of the Muslim minority groups. The large-scale migration of Han (mainstream Chinese ethnic group) population into previously Muslim-majority regions as well as government restrictions on observance of basic tenets of Islam, including wearing of veil and fasting during Ramadan, has deepened Uighur grievance against the regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In mid-2009, a series\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/asia\/china\/5805352\/As-China-reels-from-184-deaths-in-Urumqi-riots-a-beaten-woman-fears-for-her-husband.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of violent clashes between Uighurs and Han<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0residents of Urumqi led to the death and injury of as many as 184 individuals. The radicalised atmosphere has strengthened the hands of groups such as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which has called for armed resistance against Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 2013, terror hit the capital, when several Uighurs, using an SUV,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-tiananmen-idUSBRE9A003L20131101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ploughed through<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">visitors at Beijing\u2019s Tiananmen Square. The following year saw several terrorist attacks across Xinjiang, one of which claimed the lives\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-attacks-xinjiang\/almost-100-killed-during-attacks-in-chinas-xinjiang-last-week-idUSKBN0G301H20140803\">of close to hundred<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0individuals as well as an Imam perceived to be regime-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">That year also saw a group of suspected Uighur extremists\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/chinese-authorities-blame-uighur-separatists-for-knife-bloodbath\/a-17467547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chasing and assaulting civilians<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0in Kunming, in the province of Yunan, with knives, provoking fears of widespread terror attacks across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">Iron-Fist response<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In response, the communist regime, which derives its legitimacy from bringing about order and prosperity, adopted increasingly draconian measures, reportedly including\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/asia\/china-re-education-muslims-ramadan-xinjiang-eat-pork-alcohol-communist-xi-jinping-a8357966.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the establishment of \u201creeducation camps\u201d<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0for religious recantation, to crash resistance among ethnic minority groups and prevent terror attacks across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/1115022.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a particularly strident editorial,<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0The Global Times<em>,\u00a0<\/em>a hard line Chinese government mouthpiece, portrayed the ongoing crackdown on and cultural marginalisation of Uighurs as a justifiable policy to ensure\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cXinjiang has been salvaged from the verge of massive turmoil\u201d and \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">evil influence\u201d of extremism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It accused critics, particularly in the West, of trying to \u201cstir trouble for Xinjiang and destroy the hard-earned stability in the region.\u201d The newspaper claimed that the Chines government has\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">brought \u201crule of law and ethnic unity\u201d in the troubled province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Echoing the standard argument of the communist regime, the editorial argued that \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">[p]eace and stability must come above all else\u201d, even if this means the adoption of \u201call [necessary] measures\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Recent weeks saw the extension of the government\u2019s religious crackdown to the historically well-integrated\u00a0<em>Hui<\/em>\u00a0Muslims in northern Ningxia region<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">,\u00a0<\/span>reflecting a more aggressive attempt at Sinification of religion. A recent government decision to demolish the Weizhou Grand Mosque, supposedly for lack of proper permit but likely because of its more Middle Eastern design,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/chinese-muslims-protest-planned-mosque-demolition-180810104049722.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sparked days of massive protests<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0by thousands of Hui Muslims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">China\u2019s relations with Muslim-majority Central Asian neighbours have also come under strain. Recently, a Kazakh\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/kazakh-court-frees-woman-in-case-that-shed-light-on-chinese-camps-1533135983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court ruled in favour<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Sayragul Sauytbay, an ethnic<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Kazakh Chinese national, who sought refuge in the central Asian country after exposing the presence of internment \u201creeducation\u201d camps for Muslim minority groups. China sought her extradition for supposedly violating state secrets, an accusation that can carry death penalty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Her case sparked widespread outrage against China across Kazakhstan, forcing the Beijing-friendly government to protect the asylum-seeking activist.
